Drake coach Chris Creighton is not waiting until the last minute to name a replacement for all Pioneer Football League standout Mike Piatkowski at quarterback. Junior Andy Rice has been named the opening game starter over senior Nick Ens.
“He is a senior, he is just a special leader and person and I guarantee you he hasn’t given up the fight, but we are only going to have one quarterback run out there and it’s Andy Rice,” Creighton says.
Creighton says Rice has the edge in mastering the offense and know how to get into the right play, and has a little stronger arm which is accurate and he gets rid of the ball quickly.
Creighton says neither quarterback is worried about trying to replace Piatkowski. “I feel good with both of them when you’ve got a senior or a junior,” Creighton says. He says both are not afraid to step in and lead the team.
Drake opens on August 29th against Grand View.
