Two separate drownings in Mason City and Butler County over the weekend have left two men dead. Mason City police say they were called out to Big Blue pit at Ray Rorick Park at about 6:15 Saturday evening.

On arrival, they found a 79-year-old man had been pulled from the water, with several people attempting to perform CPR on him. Police and fire personnel also attempted to revive the man once they arrived on the scene. John Beery of Mason City was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where he was pronounced dead.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department says a Waterloo man drowned in a private pond in Parkersburg Saturday evening. Witnesses say at about 8 o’clock, friends noticed 21-year-old Alex Etringer had been missing for about five minutes and was last seen in the water. The friends found him under the water, pulled him to shore and performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

Etringer was taken to a Cedar Falls hospital and later transferred to an Iowa City hospital where he later died. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
