Governor Terry Branstad has ordered that flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of an Iowa policeman who was killed last week.

Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting was shot last Friday morning during a stand-off with a man wanted for assaulting his own mother.

“I have called his widow, Mandy, to express my condolences and that of the people of Iowa for the death of her husband in the line of duty,” Branstad said this morning, “and the lieutenant governor will be attending the funeral.”

Branstad made his comments during a telephone call from India, where he has been traveling on a trade mission.

Buenting was 37 years old. His funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock in the South Central Calhoun Middle School Gymnasium in Rockwell City.

Buenting was a 1995 graduate of Pomeroy-Palmer High School. He entered the law enforcement profession in 1999, serving in the Lake City Police Department. He was a police officer in Manson, Iowa, for four years before being hired by the Rockwell City Police Department in 2005. Buenting leaves behind a wife and two young children. A memorial fund has been established at the First Community Bank in Rockwell City for the family.
