A loud boom and a whoosh rattled some folks right out of their beds in an eastern Iowa town this morning. Safety equipment worked like it was designed, according to officials at ADM, and that was the reason for loud noises from the Clinton plant early this morning.

A semi hit a utility pole in area of the plant which knocked down a power line and interrupted power to the plant. Company officials say the incident caused a number of safety valves to release at once, causing the noise. Several residents described the noise as sounding like a jet plane and one compared it to the space shuttle taking off.

There were no injuries and no damage to the equipment at the ADM plant.
