The Jefferson County Attorney says charges will not be filed in the September 4th shooting of a southeast Iowa man. Authorities say David Bittner, of Lockridge, had been shot in the stomach by his son, Steven Bittner, after a confrontation.

In a statement from the Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille, an investigation into the shooting revealed Bittner, who was known to carry a firearm, kicked the door to the home where his estranged wife was babysitting a grandchild and was reaching behind his back when he was shot. As Bittner fell to the floor, he dropped a revolver.

Bittner’s intent is not known, however Dille has referred to the shooting as “justified.”
