The Des Moines Democrat who won a special election last week for an open seat in the Iowa House was sworn into office this morning.

Brian Meyer takes the seat that had been held by House Democratic Leader Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy resigned to take a job in the attorney general’s office. Meyer, who had been McCarthy’s top aide in the House, had also been a member of the Des Moines City Council for seven years. He resigned from the city council earlier this week.

His House district covers the southeast side of Des Moines. Meyer is a lawyer and a member of the Iowa National Guard.
