An illegal alien from Mexico who was living in Waterloo will serve three years in federal prison for attempting to obtain a U.S. passport. Thirty-nine-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez-Ayala was found guilty by a jury of one count of unlawful possession of an identity document, one count of making false statements in a passport application,  two counts each of making a false claim of United States citizenship, and aggravated identity theft.

The evidence at his trial showed that on Rodriguez-Ayala used a fraudulent Arizona birth certificate in his brother’s name to obtain an Iowa identification card and to register to vote. He then used the Iowa identification card and the fraudulent birth certificate to apply for a U.S. passport.
