A toddler has been released from a Sioux City hospital after authorities say she was left in parked car for nine hours. The incident took place Tuesday in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota as the temperature ranged from 2 to 19 degrees through the day.

Union County, South Dakota Sheriff Dan Limoges says the two-year-old girl, from South Sioux City, Nebraska, was left in the car parked outside her mother’s workplace. The child was bundled in warm clothes in a car seat.

The mother, identified as Anna Salas, told deputies she didn’t realize the girl was in the car until 5 p.m. Tuesday when the girl’s father reported she wasn’t at her day care. Sheriff Limoges said Salas was “very distraught” upon learning she’d left her daughter in the car.

The child was treated at a Sioux City hospital and released to her parents’ custody. Limoges says prosecutors are reviewing the case for potential charges.
