A Dubuque woman who tried to hire someone on-line to murder her dad will serve over 7 years in federal prison. Twenty-three-year old Megan Schmidt pled guilty to one count of using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder for hire.

Schmidt admitted in her plea agreement to posting two advertisements on the Craigslist website from her Apple iPhone soliciting for someone to do a “one time job.” An undercover deputy from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s office answered the ad and Schmidt called him and offered to pay him $10,000 to kill her father. The deputy arranged a meeting, and then arrested Schmidt when she showed up.

Schmidt was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison.
