A top officer at the United States Strategic Command in Omaha  has been reprimanded for gambling with counterfeit poker chips at an Iowa casino. Rear Admiral Timothy Giardina will be allowed to remain on duty as a Navy staff officer. He was charged after he used three fake $500 chips he claimed he found at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs in June last year.

Giardina was serving as deputy commander of STRATCOM with responsibility for nuclear forces at the time he used the counterfeit chips. A Navy criminal investigation could not determine with certainty how Giardina obtained the chips. The Navy, in a statement, said Giardina accepted what the military calls “non-judicial punishment” that included a $4,000 fine.
