A 43-year-old man has been sent back to prison for illegally voting in the last election.

Brian Lee Bird pled guilty to first degree election misconduct. It’s a felony conviction and Bird was sentenced to five years in prison according to a news release from the Iowa Secretary of State’s office.

Bird registered to vote and cast a ballot in Knoxville during the 2012 general election, however he was not eligible to vote because he was a felon who had not completed his probation. Bird’s previous felony conviction was for domestic abuse causing injury. State records indicate Bird was scheduled to be released from probation this July on that domestic abuse charge, but he’s back in prison now on the voter fraud charge.

The Iowa Department of Corrections lists a variety of previous convictions for Bird in Wright, Webster and Des Moines Counties.
