A man who was allegedly slashing tires with a knife in Fort Madison is now dead after a confrontation with police.

Police got a report early Sunday morning that someone was slashing the tires of cars parked in an alley in Fort Madison. Police arrived on the scene and they say 27-year-old Ryan Swearingen ran. He wound up in a house and when police came inside, Swearingen emerged from a closet and “brandished a knife” according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Swearingen was shot by an officer and died. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called in to review the case, both moves are standard procedure in these kind of shootings.
