Derrick Willies
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Derrick Willies grabbed a lot of attention in the Hawkeye spring game and now looks to carry that over into the new season. Willies says his performance came as he was feeling more comfortable on the field. “Really it was after the bowl game that the playbook started clicking for me and I felt more confident in what I was doing,” Willies says.
He says it was a matter of picking up all the details of the offense as he says they do everything by hand signals, so it was a matter of learning all the hand signals and thinking on the move.
Willies also had to work on all the other facets of the position. “It’s everything,” he says, “blocking, route running, knowing my assignment, knowing who I am supposed to block.” Willies. Willies says he wants to do what he can to make a contribution to the receiving group that has some depth this years.
Iowa opens the season August 30th hosting Northern Iowa.
