The mayor of Oelwein, charged with multiple counts of sexually abusing two young girls, has resigned. Thirty-six-year-old Jason Manus was arrested August 11th following the investigation into the alleged sexual assaults of a 9 year old girl and a 14-year-old girl that happened about four years ago.

Manus faces four charges of third-degree sex abuse and one count of second-degree sex abuse. He was held in the Fayette County Jail on $65,000 bond, but was released after posting bond during his court hearing on Wednesday.

According to sources, Manus has now submitted his resignation as mayor of Oelwein. The Oelwein City Council, which meets tonight, will consider a motion to accept that resignation. Later in the meeting, the Oelwein council will set a date to decide on the manner for filling the mayor’s seat. The council may either appoint someone to fill the position until the next election, or call for a special city-wide election.
