Iowa DCI agents are investigating a weekend shooting at a hospital in northeast Iowa. The shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union. A release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s office indicates a deputy took a jail inmate to the hospital for treatment and was removing handcuffs from one hand when the inmate grabbed the deputy’s gun and demanded to be released.

The deputy “deployed a non-lethal device” at the inmate, who then shot the deputy. The inmate then fatally shot himself. The release states the deputy was wearing a bullet proof vest and was treated and released from the hospital. He was shot in the abdomen. The names of the deputy and inmate have not been released.
