The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released the names of the inmate and deputy involved in a fatal shooting at a West Union Hospital Saturday. DCI spokesperson Alex Murphy says the Fayette County deputy was Jeremy Stiefel, and the inmate was 32-year-old Steven Harreld.

Harreld was taken to Palmer Lutheran Hospital from the jail Friday for treatment of a medical condition. Stiefel arrived at the hospital to pick him up and return him to the jail Saturday morning. Authorities say Stiefel uncuffed one of Harreld’s hands in order for him to change clothes and they got into a struggle.

Harreld ended up with Stiefel’s gun, fired a shot at Stiefel, then turned the gun on himself. Harreld was pronounced dead at the scene. Stiefel was treated for a gunshot wound to the stomach. The state medical examiner says Harreld’s cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
