Part of a brick, two-story building in the east-central Iowa town of Toledo collapsed late Monday night. Toledo Police Chief Bob Kendall says four people were living in an apartment on the second floor, but they got out safely.

The incident happened just before 11 p.m. in downtown Toledo. Much of the building crumbled into an alley. Kendall says an apartment next door to the building was evacuated as a precaution. The owners of the building were renovating the first floor for a restaurant business, but it’s unclear if that had anything to do with the partial collapse.

“I don’t why it collapsed. I don’t know if they were working on it or what the deal was,” Kendall said. An inspection is underway to determine if there is any danger of an additional collapse.
