Authorities are on the lookout for a Maynard man who allegedly fired shots at an Oelwein police officer on Thursday afternoon. The incident began on the northeast side of Oelwein and authorities had taped off an area of 2nd Avenue NE and 1st Street NE late Thursday.

According to sources, someone heard a half-dozen shots fired in the area. A suspect, 33-year-old Abel Quijas Junior of Maynard, is wanted on charges of attempted murder involving a police officer. There is no word on if a police officer was wounded. Quijas apparently fled on foot.

Authorities concentrated their search on the northeast edge of Oelwein, at a cornfield near Outer Road. At the time, local school facilities were placed on lock down, however, school is being held as scheduled today. Authorities did find an abandoned car with front-end damage on Outer Road, and were concentrating their search in a corn field.

Quijas is described as an Hispanic male, 5’8, and 185 lbs. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact local law enforcement.
