University of Iowa president, Sally Mason has announced new incentives designed to attract more students to the Iowa City campus. “They’re heritage scholarships. So if your mom, or your dad, or your grandmother or your grandfather graduated from the University of Iowa, or your stepdad or stepmom or legal guardian graduated from the University of Iowa, you will automatically be eligible for a $6,000 Heritage Scholarship spread out over 4-years,” according to Mason.

In addition, the U-I will add a discount of an additional $6,000 over four-years for up to 20 “legacy students” with exceptional academic records in what are called the President’s Heritage Awards. “For in-state students, it’ll cover, it’ll more than cover the cost of tuition. For out-of-state students, it comes close to covering about half the cost of out-of-state tuition. So it could be substantial for families,” Mason says.

The U-I is also boosting existing scholarships in an effort to lure in more students from the state. The Board or Regents recently approved a new funding formula that is based on the number of in-state students at each school.
