A plant in Grinnell that’s been making mufflers for six decades will soon close. Donaldson Company will close its plant in Grinnell, putting 75 people out of work.

The plant opened in 1952. It makes mufflers and other exhaust products for off-road equipment. According to a company statement, demand for their mufflers “has fallen steeply” as diesel emission regulations tightened and equipment manufacturers opt for emission control systems rather than mufflers.

The close-down will be phased in, as muffler manufacturing in Grinnell is shifted to other Donaldson plants. Donaldson has nearly 13,000 employees who work at more than 140 locations around the globe.
