Iowa State started quickly and finished strong in a 73-56 victory over Missouri-Kansas City in Hilton Coliseum. Bryce Dejean-Jones led the Cyclones with 22 points and Monte’ Morris added 13 as the Cyclones improved to 6-1.

“I was really proud of how they came out of the lockerroom and we jumped on them early, and that’s something that we really stressed in the last couple of days of practice, to take that momentum from that Arkansas game — especially the start — and duplicate that momentum, and that’s exactly what we did,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said.

After building a 21 point first have advantage the Cyclones allowed the Kangaroos to crawl back into contention. Hoiberg says they had some “mindless” turnovers and didn’t get spaced out very well, and once they did that again, they built the lead back up.

The Hawks took control with a late 10-0 run in the opening half. “They had been playing at a much faster pace…so obviously they worked on spreading us out, running the shot clock down and trying to get a matchup they like and then going off the dribble.” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.

Aaron White led the Hawkeyes with 15 points, Jarod Uthoff added 13 and Gabe Olesani had 12 points and ten rebounds.

Iowa improves to 8-2.  The Hawkeyes will host the Cyclones Friday night in Iowa City.
