A man who admitted to selling drugs to a person who later died was sentenced a second time to 30 years in federal prison. Fifty-year-old Alvin Briggs Junior of Dubuque admitted to selling 100 dollars worth of heroin to a person back in July of 2012.
The person died as a result of using the drug. Briggs reached a plea agreement in June of 2013 where he admitted the drugs contributed to the person’s death and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The conviction was overturned by the U-S Supreme Court, which ruled you can’t be convicted of distributing drugs that caused a death unless it was proven that the drugs directly caused the death.
Briggs changed his plea in October to say the person would have lived if he hadn’t used the heroin Briggs sold to him. He was sentenced for the second time to 30 years in prison.
