A former police officer from northern Iowa was shot last night, moments after being sworn in as a police officer in a Twin Cities suburb. It was a routine city council meeting in New Hope that included the swearing in of former Mason City officer Joshua Eernisse and another officer, Adam Johnson.

Chaos erupted after the two officers were sworn in and were leaving the city council chambers when they were confronted by a man with a “long gun” and were shot. The audio of the shooting was captured on videotape.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department says the two officers are in good condition, while the suspect was shot and killed by another officer. The suspect’s name was not released and there’s no apparent motive for the shooting.

Mason City Police Chief Mike Lashbrook says Eernisse worked for the police department from February 2008 to January 2014. Both officers had been working for the New Hope Police Department for exactly a year and had just passed their one-year probation period with the department. Reports say Eernisse had moved back to Minnesota to be closer to his family.
