Fire-truckSome residents reportedly had to jump from third-story windows to escape a fire Sunday morning in southeast Iowa.

An early morning fire at an apartment building near downtown Burlington on South 3rd Street sent four residents to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

A Burlington firefighter was also injured while assisting residents and was also transported to the Great River Medical Center. All five were treated and released.

There were 12 residents at home at the time of the fire and the building is likely a total loss. Burlington firefighters were assisted by West Burlington in fighting the fire and the investigation into the cause continues by the Burlington police and fire departments and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office.
