Top ranked Burlington Notre Dame outscored Central Lyon 20-4 to start the fourth quarter in a 78-60 victory in a class 1A quarterfinal. The game was tied at 49 at the end of the third quarter.

“I think we all just knew that our offense comes from our defense, so we came out from the lockerroom knowing that we were going to play as hard was we can, everything was on the line,” senior guard Taylor Hickey said.

Hickey led Notre Dame with 21 points. Hickey said Central Lyon made it a game by dominating the glass and boxing them out. “I think they got a lot of put backs, a lot of tips and steals off of that, and that got us out of our comfort zone,” Hickey said.

Central Lyon closes out the season with a record of 18-7. Senior Sarah Halse who had 19 points to lead Central Lyon.

Sixth ranked Newell-Fonda outscored seventh ranked Colo-Neso 18-9 in the third quarter to take command and roared away to a 70-42 win in the class 1A opener at the girls state tournament. Senior guard Brianna Wells led the Mustangs with 21 points as the improve to 21-4 on the season. “Out intensity got a lot better, in the first half we were really tense, in the second half we really relaxed,” Wells says.

Wells says advancing to Thursday’s 1A semifinals is “awesome” as some people doubted they could get back to the tournament after losing players from last year.

Senior guard Shayla Dean led Colo-Nesco with 15 points before fouling out late in the contest.

The Royals end their season with a record of 23-2.
