Sheriff vehicleAuthorities now say last week’s death of a Crystal Lake boy who was pulled from a lake was an accident.

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd says 4-year-old Joel Nedved of Crystal Lake likely walked onto the ice and fell over the edge into open water while playing with his father and the family dog last Friday afternoon at Crystal Lake State Park. The lake had ice cover but also had large areas of open water.

The boy was reported missing at around 2:00 PM, and was found in four feet of water about 100 feet from the shore at about 5:00 PM. Nedved was airlifted to the Mayo Clinic Hospitals in Rochester Minnesota where he died on Saturday.
