DPS-sign-2

Update:  DPS identifies the driver as Chauncey Jewett of Sioux City.

A teenager is charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a shot at an officer during a high-speed chase Monday afternoon. Department of Public Safety spokesman, Alex Murphy, says a DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement officer stopped to check on a vehicle parked on I-29 in Harrison County.

“He made contact with the driver who provided him a fake driver’s license. At that time the suspect fled off in his car and that is when the pursuit started with the DOT officer and several other agencies were involved,” Murphy explains. The chase reached speeds that exceeded 100 miles-an-hour — and during the chase — a patrol car was hit by a bullet. Murphy says the driver stuck his head out the window and fired a shot at the DOT officer.

None of the officers were injured by the shot or during the chase. The chase ended after about 10 miles when the man and passenger were caught. “They stopped him I believe at a rest area, and that’s when they got out of the vehicle and fled from officers. Both were arrested, one by the Missouri Valley police department and the other by other DOT officers,” Murphy says.

The 17-year-old driver is charged with attempted murder. A 20-year-old female passenger, Sydney Swanson of Sioux City, was arrested and charge with identity theft and interference with officials acts. Murphy says they are not identifying the driver because of his age. He is not sure why the teen fled.

though says they have been told the suspect may have a criminal past.

Murphy says more charges are pending as officers complete the investigation of the chase and shooting.
