A former Des Moines police officer has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for kicking a detained man in the head after a traffic stop.

Orville Hill had crashed his car on a Des Moines street in February of 2013. Three other cops were restraining Hill, on the ground, when officer Colin Boone kicked Hill. The force of that one kick from Boone, who weighed 400 pounds at the time, knocked out two of Hill’s front teeth.

The cop says he was aiming to kick Hill’s shoulder because he thought Hill was getting an arm free and could use it to leverage himself off the ground.

In November of last year a jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case, but in March a second jury found the former policeman guilty of the use of unreasonable force. Boone was sentenced to 63 months in a federal prison on Monday.
