University of Dubuque football coach Stan Zweifel says a victory over Wartburg won’t decide the Iowa Conference race but it does put the Spartans in the drivers seat. Dubuque stunned the two-time defending champions 45-13 and at 3-0 are the lone remaining unbeaten in league play heading into Saturday’s visit to Buena Vista.

“The biggest thing you always want to have a kid do is enjoy what he is doing and of course winning makes that so much easier”, said Zweifel. Our kids are really having a lot of fun and I hope we can continue that. It will be a tough game at Buena Vista and we have so many tough games left but we have put ourselves early in a position to be in consideration which I am really excited about.”

After starting 0-2 against a rugged non conference schedule the Spartans have won four straight games.

The win over Wartburg was Dubuque’s first since 2006 and the Spartans have the inside track to their first Iowa Conference title since 2011.
