Sheriff-patrolThe Madison County Sheriff’s Office is trying to determine the cause of an accident between a jeep and a semi that left one person dead in Winterset late Saturday night.

When Deputies arrived, one of the vehicles described as a 1996 Jeep Cherokee was fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 48-year-old John Eller of Winterset.

Eller  was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County Medical Examiner.

The two occupants of the second vehicle were identified as Gary and Frances Hagey both of Clarinda, Iowa. Neither of the Hageys suffered any known injuries. A preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle driven by Eller was westbound on Summit Avenue when it struck the rear of the Hagey vehicle described as a semi tractor trail that was also westbound.
