Ottumwa Police have identified a man who was shot by officers over the weekend. Police were sent to a house fire in Ottumwa just before 9 a.m. Saturday and were told there was a man outside the residence shooting a rifle.

Shortly after officers arrived, two people exited the home and said there were still three others inside the burning home. Then, police say 60-year-old Michael Heady Sr. came outside carrying an AK-47 rifle. The officers ordered Heady to drop the rifle, but he refused and then raised the rifle at the officers, according to a news release. That’s when the officers shot Heady. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. His condition is not available.

The two people who were still in the home escaped the fire. The two officers involved in the shooting, Sergeant Noah Aljets and Officer Derek Shaw, are now on administrative leave as the shooting is under review by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
