Iowa-delegation-DNCIowa Democrats at their party’s national convention in Philadelphia have been gathering to eat together each morning this week, but a pork product that’s widely available at home isn’t on the breakfast buffet.

“There is not bacon!” Iowa Democratic Party chairwoman Andy McGuire said, stating what had become obvious to many.

And, after apparently fielding several questions about the missed menu item, she addressed the sizzling issue.

“I’ll explain bacon,” McGuire began. “So when we first came here and talked to them about things and we asked them about bacon and it was exorbitantly priced. We said…’We’re a hog producing state. We’ll just bring our own.’ And they didn’t seem to think that was funny. And yesterday, because I love bacon — who doesn’t? — I had them price it for us and it was going to be $700 more a day to add bacon.”

The crowd of about 75 Iowans groaned audibly, but not in complaint. McGuire is getting support for her budgeting decision that will save the state party $2,400 in food expenses this week.

“That’s a mailing…We might get another candidate in the House or the Senate or we might get another congressman. I can’t spend that money on bacon,” McGuire said, getting applause from her fellow partisans who’ve been deprived of pork this week. “When you don’t have bacon, just think: ‘I’m going to get another person elected.'”

Democratic delegates from Wisconsin, Montana and Alaska have been eating breakfast together in a huge hotel ballroom next door to Iowa’s gathering space — and on Tuesday a massive bowl of apparently expensive sausage links was on their buffet line.
