Investigators don’t believe distraction or impairment were factors in the Wednesday afternoon crash that killed a West Des Moines police officer.

The Iowa State Patrol says 47-year-old Officer Shawn Miller was riding his personal motorcycle when a car pulled in front of him at an intersection near Interstate 80 in Dallas County. Miller had been in the county to testify in a hit-and-run case.

Miller had been on the force 26 years, he was married and had three children. He’s the first West Des Moines officer to die on duty in 83 years and he’s the third Iowa police officer lost this year. Two Des Moines police officers were killed by a drunk driver in March.

The driver of the car in Wednesday’s fatal crash is identified as 38-year-old Jeanette Keifer of Stratford. She was not hurt.
