Police car lightsAn elderly man from Arizona and an elderly couple from Iowa were flown to University Hospitals in Iowa City after a wreck in Dubuque this morning.

Dubuque police say a 70-year-old man from Yuma, Arizona, was driving a semi through Dubuque. An SUV driven by a 78-year-old man from Asbury, Iowa, started to make a left-hand turn. The semi and the SUV collided “nearly head-on” according to police. The semi careened off the road and hit the pole of a stop light.

A passenger in the semi was not injured, but the semi driver was trapped. Emergency crews had to use special equipment to get him out of the rig. The semi driver, along with the SUV’s driver and his 80-year-old wife were all air-lifted to Iowa City for treatment.

The road where the accident happened has been closed all day. Crews brought in heavy equipment to try to repair the traffic lights at the intersection.
