A Sioux City man is facing criminal charges for allegedly starting a fire in his home. Sioux City Fire Marshall Mark Aesoph says police were sent to the home at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.
“When they arrived on the scene, there had been a small fire in the home that was put out by the residents prior to (the police officers) arrival. The fire in the home was intentionally set,” Aesoph said. Twenty-two-year-old Trevor Worrell is charged with four counts of first-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief. Firefighters were not called to home.
“The police department was on the scene very quickly, so on this, it wasn’t much of an origin and cause investigation – which would be more of our specialty. It was just strictly a criminal investigation at that point,” Aesoph said. Worrell lives in the home and four other family members were there at the time of the incident. No one was injured.
Court documents state Worrell came home intoxicated and was upset over a gate in front of his bedroom door to keep family dogs out. He allegedly taped a pillow to his closet door and set it on fire. He’s also accused of causing other damage to the home and threatening to kill his sister. Worrell is being held in the Woodbury County Jail on $25,000 bond.
