police-car-lightsTwo Des Moines area police officers were shot to death early this morning.

Police were called out on a report of shots fired shortly after 1 A.M. and found an Urbandale police officer had been shot.

About 20 minutes later, a Des Moines police officer was found shot about two miles away.

Both officers were still in their cars. Neither survived.

In a news release, police say the shootings appear to have been “ambush-style attacks.”

Suspect information is being developed, though no arrests have been made and neither officers name was released.

Governor Branstad’s office issued a statement this morning:

“An attack on public safety officers is an attack on the public safety of all Iowans.  We call on Iowans to support our law enforcement officials in bringing this suspect to justice.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the police officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty as well as the officers who continue to put themselves in harm’s way.”
