Despite losing several key players, including All-American Georges Niang, from last year’s team the beat goes on at Iowa State where the Cyclones are up to 19th in the latest Associated Press Poll. Iowa State is 5-1 after falling to eighth ranked Gonzaga 73-71 in the championship game of the Advocare Invitational on Sunday.

“I think our senior leadership has been really good”, said Iowa State coach Steve Prohm. “Monte is obviously a special player. Naz’s leadership has been great. Matt is a terrific player and Burton needs to play at the level he is playing right now. These older guys have a lot of pride and they are used to winning.”

Senior guard Naz Mitrou-Long says he learned a lot about this team at the tournament in Florida.

“I think we can play with anybody in the country”, said Long. “We have got heart and are willing to battle with whoever.”

Iowa State returns to action Thursday by hosting Cincinnati.
