cr-police-patchA Cedar Rapids Police officer has been cleared in the shooting of man during a traffic stop on November 1st.

Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden announced Tuesday afternoon that a Linn County grand jury will not indict Officer Lucas Jones in the shooting of Jerime Mitchell, who was left paralyzed. Jones told DCI agents he stopped Mitchell because none of the lights were working on his vehicle and Mitchell was “combative” immediately.

The officer was caught in the open door of Mitchell’s truck when Mitchell accelerated. Jones said he feared his life was in jeopardy and fired three shots. One hit Mitchell in the neck. Police say they found $1,500 cash in the truck and over a pound of marijuana in various packaging.
