NCAA hurdle champ preparing for USA meet in Des Moines

A newly crowned NCAA champion in the womens 100 hurdles will try to earn a spot in the world championships next week when she competes at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines.

Clemson junior Brianna Rollins set a new record in the preliminary round and the finals at the NCAA meet. Her time was the fastest in the world this year.

“It was unbelievable, but again, I’ve worked so hard this season and I was looking forward to running a fast time,” Rollins says.

Rollins says her goal is to make the U.S. squad that competes in Moscow later this summer.

The U.S. Championships begin next Wednesday in Drake Stadium.

Lynnville-Sully working 13-game win streak

A lengthy winning streak has moved Lynnville-Sully into the number-7 spot in class 1A in the latest high school softball ranking. The Hawks have won 13 straight games and coach Stacy Alberts credits team chemistry as one of the biggest factors.

“This is just a pretty tight-knit group, they get along well, they work together well, you can see their synergies on the field and off the field too,” Alberts says.

Sophomore Madison Rasmussen is 14-3 on the mound and also leads the team in hitting with a .537 average. Rasmussen leads off and Alberts says she finds ways to get on base and they find a way to get her around.

The winning streak will be on the Line this evening when Lynnville Sully plays North Mahaska. The teams met in the season opener and Lynnville-Sully came away with a 1-0 win. Alberts says they always have a great game with North Mahaska, no matter what the conference standings are.

Summer leagues give fans a chance to see college basketball players

Two summer leagues popular with college basketball fans are set to begin. The YMCA Capital City League is played in West Des Moines and features players from Iowa State and Drake.

League commissioner Derek Hannah says they are a looking forward to a great summer and especially how the new Drake coaching staff will approach the league. Opening night is on Sunday and the games are played at Valley Southwoods.

“For a freshman high school it’s a great facility that can hold about 1,200 people. Sometimes we have standing-room only when some of the bigger guys come out to play,” Hanah says.

Hannah the games are held on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through July 14th. Hannah says the league will finish with a post season tournament that is two nights.

The Prime Time League near Iowa City is entering its 27th season and has always been popular with Iowa Hawkeye fans. Iowa City attorney Randy Larson has served as commissioner since the league started and says it allow fans to see if the incoming players are as good as advertised.

Larson says fans get to find out for themselves if the players can play, such as incoming Iowa freshman, Peter Jok. Larson says the Prime Time League has six teams this summer. That’s two more than a year ago.

“The number of teams is dictated by the number of returning Iowa players. The NCAA rule is that you can only have two returning players per summer league team,” Larson explains. Last year they only had 8 returning Iowa players, but this year they have 12 returners and can add 2 more teams.

Games are played at the North Liberty Community Center and begin June 20th on Thursdays and Sundays. The schedule is on  the league website.

Larson says Devyn Marble and Aaron White may not play many games in the league this summer. Both have been invited to a tryout for the USA basketball World University Games team and will be at the first game, but if they make the team they won’t play any of the rest of the games. “And gosh we hope they miss all the rest,” Larson says, as he says it would be an honor for them to make the team.

Larson says they also offer the Game Time League for womens basketball players.

World of Outlaws returns to Knoxville

More than 70 cars are expected at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night as the World of Outlaws return. It will be their final stop at the track before the Knoxville Nationals in August. Promoter Brian Stickel says the biggest names in sprint car racing will be there.

Stickel says for many of the drivers it will be their final chance to test the half-mile dirt oval before the Knoxville Nationals and compete against the “Big Guns” so he says they are anxious to be there.

Stickel says it will be a full night of action wit close to 50 410 cars and close to 25 360′s. The program starts with hot laps at 6:45 and they hope to be done with the features at about 10:30.

Stickel encourages fans to make a day of it and stop by the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum which is located on Turn two. The museum is open at 8 o’clock and has a lot of videos and displays.

A Marco Andretti exhibit is slated to open on July 15th.

Benton Community off to strong start in baseball

Benton Community baseball coach Derrick Anderson has been pleased with his team’s start to the season. The Bobcats are 10-3 after a Monday night split of a doubleheader with Marion and they are ranked third in class 3A in the latest Radio Iowa/Coaches Poll.

Anderson says they still have a long way to go to be where they want to be at tournament time, but have a strong set of pitchers and are fielding the ball well.

Pitching has been a major factor in Benton’s success and Anderson says the staff has taken an aggressive approach to the mound. “Attacking the strike zone, controlling what you can control with every pitch you throw…even if you’re struggling, we’ve talked a lot about continuing to battle,” Anderson says.

Anderson says he would like to see his team become more consistent on offense. He says last week they were pleased with their quality of bats and approach at the plate. Benton returns to action tonight with a doubleheader at Anamosa.
