About one in four Iowa motorists are still ignoring the law and are NOT securing their children in cars. A statewide survey finds 75 percent of motorists buckled their kids in child safety seats last year — that’s an increase of one and a half percent from the year before, but officials in the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau say it’s still not good enough.Bob Thompson, program evaluator for the Bureau, says the 75 percent compliance number for 1999 is very good, especially compared to previous years. He says only about half of Iowans had their kids in safety seats according to the survey done in 1990.Thompson says there are certain areas in which the state is focusing and hoping to get more parents to obey the law and keep their kids safe.He says motor vehicle accidents are the number-one cause of death for people 34 years old and younger.
