Democrat presidential candidate Bill Bradley says land mines are a hazard that should no longer be visited upon innocent civilians entering what used to be a warzone. During an appearance last night in Des Moines, Bradley announced his support for a ban on the production, sale, use and stockpiling of anti-personnel land mines.Bradley says the ban will in no way compromise U-S military options as it exempts mines which are detonated by a remote device.Bradley says while it’s not been a major topic on the campaign trail, there are some Iowans who follow defense issues closely.Bradley spoke at an airport rally as he begins the 17-day push for Iowa’s Caucuses. Bradley’s campaign is ramping up here — with more volunteers, particularly college students fanning out across the state, as well as the candidate’s own investment of time and money. In the final days of the campaign, 400 “friends of Bill” will canvas the state for Bradley, including some former basketball stars.Bradley campaigns today in Des Moines. His rival, Al Gore, campaigns in Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and West Des Moines today. The two men face-off tomorrow in a debate in Iowa. That debate will be broadcast “live” on the Radio Iowa channel.
