With the holiday season now behind us, the flu season is kicking into full gear. State epidemiologist Patricia Quinlisk says the flu actually hit Iowa quite early and is just now starting to spread statewide. Quinlisk says the dominant strain of the flu bug, “Influenza A Sydney”, has a bigger bite than some others and will probably keep you sick a few days longer. If you got a flu shot, you may be one of the lucky ones who doesn’t get the flu, but she says the shots are only about 70 to 90-percent effective.Quinlisk says it is not too late to get a flu shot.If you’re like hundreds of other Iowans and get the flu, Quinlisk suggests you stay home and take care of yourself.Quinlisk says people in “high risk” groups, such as the elderly, should be particularily carefull and get a flu shot.
