An Iowa child advocacy coalition is releasing a report today it hopes will spur legislators to take a look at spending more money on child care programs. Charles Bruner is a spokesman for “Iowa Kids Count.”Iowa’s moved from one-quarter of the families needing child care to three-quarters that now need child care. Bruner says the state support for child care programs hasn’t kept pace.He says welfare reform legislation has gotten low-income families back into the Iowa workforce, but hasn’t helped them with child care.He says spending more money on child care will take a change in philosophy among lawmakers.Bruner says “Iowa Kids Count” wants the issue to get some debate. The legislative session opens next week.
