State climatologist says history favors March snow

March 1, 1999 By admin

MARCH CAME IN LIKE A LAMB TODAY, WHICH TRADITIONALLY MEANS IT WILL GO OUT LIKE A LION. BUT NOT IN IOWA, ACCORDING TO STATE CLIMATOLOGIST HARRY HILLAKER. HILLACKER SAYS MARCH IN IOWA TENDS TO BRING MORE WINTERY WEATHER THAN OTHER MONTHS. HE SAYS THAT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH MEANS HEAVIER SNOWFALL, WHICH TAPERS OFF TO MORE SPRING-LIKE WEATHER TOWARD THE END. BUT HILLAKER SAYS THAT THIS YEAR’S WEATHER PATTERN, LA NINA, MAY HELP KEEP THE SHOVEL IN THE GARAGE WITH DRIER THAN USUAL WEATHER.
