There’s a snag in the plan to hold a June 29th special election for proposed constitutional amendments which would limit state government’s taxing and spending authority. Secretary of State Chet Culver says legislators failed to set-up the vote in time. Culver, the state’s commissioner of elections, says he’s required by rule to send out public notices 150 days before any election, and legislators gave him less time than that. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson says it’s news to him, and he’s not sure what the options are. House Republican Leader Brent Siegrist isdisappointed Culver, who’s a democrat, waited ’til now to bring up the issue. House Speaker Ron Corbett, a republican from Cedar Rapids, wouldconsider moving the vote from June 29th to sometime in August. The constitutional amendments would limit state government spending to 99percent of taxes paid the state and would require a 60 percent vote in the legislature to raise taxes.
