Ban on laser pointers considered

March 2, 1999 By admin

A Des Moines suburb may become the first city in the state to take a stand on laser pointers. The Windsor Heights city council gave preliminary approval last night to an ordinance that’ll ban the mischievous use of laser pointers & to ban the sale of them to minors. Two more votes on the ordinance will be required. The inexpensive pointers shoot a ray of concentrated light which can damage the eye — and can lead the person being spotted by the pointer to think they’re being targeted by a laser-sighted weapon. People who break the proposed new ordinance would face a 100-dollar fine, 30 days in jail, or both. Pointing a laser at a police officer or emergency worker would be considered assault.
