A report from a children’s advocacy group says the state isn’t doing enough to help Iowa’s most vulnerable children. The “Iowa Kids Count” coalition report released today says while Iowa’s unemployment rate has gone down by over half and personal income has grown by two-percent annually from 1983 to 1996, conditions for “at risk” kids haven’t kept pace. Child and Policy Center director Charles Bruner says the low birthweight rate and births among 16 and 17-year olds increased. The graduation rate also decreased. Bruner says it’s time for state government to give as much attention to these issues as it has to economic development and growth of the state. Bruner admits things can’t be changed overnight.
