Fighting methamphetamine is the focus of a bill being introduced in both chambers of Congress today by two members of the Iowa delegation. Senator Tom Harkin and Third District Congressman Leonard Boswell are sponsoring the measure. Harkin says it’d focus in four areas — the first two being law enforcement and better education programs. The bill would provide 35-milliondollars for the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and 20-million dollars to expand school and community-based prevention efforts. Boswell says the meth problem is the worst crisis Iowa has faced during his lifetime. Boswell says the Comprehensive Methamphetamine Control Act would give communities the tools they need to fight the illegal drug. Harkin says the bill would also strengthen penalties on people caught makingor selling meth.
