The Senate Judiciary committee has approved a bill which toughens Iowa’s blood alcohol standard for drunken driving to point-oh-eight(.08). Committee chairman Andy Mc-Kean pushed the bill through despite Senate leaders’ assertions that it won’t be considered by the full, 50-member Senate. Mc-Kean, a republican from Anamosa, was initially undecided about the bill but discovered new evidence which shows drivers are impaired at thepoint-oh-eight level. The current level of intoxication is point-one on a blood alcohol test. Mc-Kean hopes the public calls legislators to share their views on the proposal to lower the drunken driving limit to point-oh-eight.
