State officials say the new IPSCO steel plant near Montpelier is emitting sulfur dioxide at nearly 14 times the level agreed to in its permit. Department of Natural Resources Air Quality Bureau Chief Peter Hamlin says tests showed the increase despite IPSCO’s claims it could keep the emmissions down. He says emmisions from the plant are about the same as similar plants across the country and DON’T pose a danger for MuscatineCounty residents. Hamlin says the D-N-R has not considered any penalties against the plant. He says they want to try to work out a compromise first.
